Review of Hex Appeal by Linda Wisdom

Hex Appeal is a fun and entertaining follow-up in the series that began with 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover.

The story picks up not long after 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover ended with Jasmine “Jazz” Tremaine, a spirited witch full of personality, and her vampire boyfriend Nikolai “Nick” Gregorivich trying to settle down and have a normal (or at least what is normal for them) relationship.

When they begin having unsettling dreams that wreak havoc on their relationship as well as on their sleep, Jazz knows she must find the source before their relationship is damaged beyond repair and for her own peace of mind.

In the meantime, she must also prove the innocence of her mischievous (and slightly vicious) bunny slippers when a local wereweasel carnie goes missing from the boardwalk and they are the main suspects.

With the help of some of their unusual friends, Jazz and Nick are determined to find out what is going on and who is behind everything that is happening.

Hex Appeal was a highly entertaining read filled with humor, mystery, and a menagerie of colorful characters.  Having enjoyed the first book in the series, I was looking forward to reading this one and I wasn’t disappointed.  While the book is the second in the series, it could stand alone.  However, I would recommend reading both books because they are both great, fun reads and because the first book gives you a little bit of background on Jazz and Nick and their relationship as well as background on some of the other characters you’ll meet in this wonderful book.

One of the things I love most about this book is the character of Jazz.  With her sassy personality, Jazz is such a fun heroine and I loved reading about her (mis)adventures.   She and Nick definitely make an interesting couple and it was nice to be able to revisit them in this book and see what happens with their rollercoaster of a relationship.  There’s never a dull moment with Jazz.

As with the first book in the series, the secondary characters of Hex Appeal really enhanced the story and added to my enjoyment.  Some of my favorites from the first book return such as Irma, Dweezil, Krebs, Fluff and Puff.  But we also get to meet a few new characters such as Croc and Delilah, Jazz’s flirty crocodile boots, Thea, a fellow witch who writes romance novels, and Jazz’s collection of rubber duckies who enjoy baths just as much as she does.  The author brought the characters to life and I found myself laughing aloud at some of the characters’ antics.  They definitely all have interesting personalities.

As for the mystery (or rather mysteries) of the story, I found myself just as curious as Jazz about what was going on and couldn’t wait to find out.  The story held my attention from the first page to its surprising conclusion as the past came back to haunt them.

Hex Appeal is a wildly entertaining ride that doesn’t disappoint!
