Thursday Thirteen #4

Thirteen Things I Have Learned from My Nephews and Nieces Part 1*
*check back next week for Part 2

1.  A child’s favorite word is “Why:” For example, “Please clean up this mess.” “Why?”  “It’s time for bed.”  “Why?”

2.  Never ask a kid what they want to eat.  You will spend 20 minutes waiting for them to decide, 30 minutes negotiating with them to eat because they don’t like how you fixed it, and 5 minutes tossing it all out.  Then an hour later they will come to you hungry and wanting a snack.

3.  If giving a child crayons, supervise!!  If not, don’t be surprised if you get some lovely murals on the table, chairs, television, and let’s not forget the giant roller coaster mural on the living room wall!

4.  A child can be brutally honest about some things but show no qualms about lying when asked “Who made this mess?”

5.  If you sit in the floor it apparently means “Let’s wrestle” or “I’ll be the pony.”

6.  The word “Don’t” is not in a child’s vocabulary so they ignore it when you say it.  For example, “Don’t throw the ball in the house” translates to “Throw the ball in the house.” And “Don’t hit your brother” translates to “Hit your brother.”

7.  People in costumes can be a scary and traumatizing thing to a child…even hand puppets might trigger some tears.

8.  Hannah Montana can be fun to watch and educational (okay, learned that one from my 30-something-year-old brother who knows the Bone Dance song from the show by heart…LOL…guess the kids made him watch…LOL)

9.  Thanks to a child’s imagination, everyday objects can become anything they want.   A bed becomes a slide when the mattress is moved just right…a couch becomes a trampoline…a nightstand becomes a diving board…a ceiling fan becomes a trapeze (okay…so maybe not this last one…but give them time).

10.  The memory of a child is a powerful thing as evident by my nephew who still remembers what he ate for lunch at a restaurant 5 years ago when he was three and not to mention the other kids who remember almost every word to every Disney movie they have ever seen.

11.  Never get in the way of a hungry baby and her {insert any food here}

12.  It is fun being an aunt…especially when shopping for noisy or messy toys to give them to take to their houses!

13. Nothing beats hearing a child say, “I love you” and giving you big hugs and sloppy kisses.
