Susanna Carr Giveaway!

Thursday, May 22, 2008

Today, Susanna is having a giveaway!

Red-Hot and Royal

June 2008

Signet Eclipse

ISBN: 0451223993

Notify the royal guard… three everyday women are about to break through the gates, take on the palace and turn on the princes.

Kylee, Lauren and Shayla are modern-day ordinary women who would never meet the requirements for fabled princesses. Damsels in distress? Definitely not. Fairest in the land? They wish. Pure as snow? Not even close. Now these three women are about to get to know the wild side of royalty—and inspire three princes to cast the crown aside and bare it all. Their encounters are royally erotic—and the happily ever after they reach is not exactly the fairytale ending you’d expect. It’s much, much hotter. One thing’s for sure: These princes never had it so good….

While I was writing Red-Hot and Royal, I had to do some research about royalty and there were definitely some interesting people. Some were heroic, a few were crazy, some were accomplished, and others were just drop-dead gorgeous. There were a few kings and queens I would have loved to have met and a few royal members I would have avoided at all costs!

Contest question: If you could have tea with one royal person (living or dead, real or fictional) who would it be?

The prize: A gift pack of Ceylon Gold Tea Over Ice Infusers*

*Unfortunately, due to size of the prize and cost of postage, this prize is only available for US residents.  An alternative prize of the same value will be offered ONLY if the winner is outside the US.

Just answer the contest question when you leave a comment!

Winner will be randomly selected from those that answer the question and announced here tomorrow so please be sure to check back to see if you won.

Remember to read the Contest Rules (found in sidebar).

And a BIG thanks to Susanna for being a guest the last couple of days!

Susanna Carr Guest Blogs!

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Today’s guest is author Susanna Carr!

So Not a Princess – Susanna Carr

My upcoming release, Red-Hot and Royal, is about three modern-day ordinary women who would never meet the requirements for fabled princesses. There were a couple of things that inspired this story, but a lot of it had to do with traditional fairy tale heroines.

Someone once asked me which fairy tale was my favorite. I said it was Sleeping Beauty because it’s about awakening. This guy didn’t see it that way at all and asked me to retell the story in my own words. So I did. And I explained it I realized that the heroine of the story didn’t do much.

When I got to the point of where the prince kisses Sleeping Beauty, I stopped and said, “You know, I would like it better if Sleeping Beauty woke up on her own power.”

I don’t know if I can say Sleeping Beauty is my favorite anymore. She doesn’t act the way I would want to. I need a heroine who is going to get up and do something. I can’t say Cinderella is going to be my new favorite because I want a heroine who stands up for herself. And Snow White just gets on my nerves.

What about you? Which fairy tale heroine is the LEAST like you?

Thanks Susanna for that great blog.

Go ahead and answer her question and check back tomorrow for a contest from Susanna!

Interview with Esri Rose…and a contest

Monday, May 19, 2008

Today I welcome author, Esri Rose.

Esri Rose lives in Boulder, Colorado, where elves could walk the streets without undue attention. Esri lives with her husband, Angel Joe, and her cat, Musette La Plume, only one of whom has pointy ears.

Welcome! Please tell us about your book, Bound to Love Her.

It’s the story of Erin, who owns a New Age shop but doesn’t believe in the supernatural, and Galan, a Tolkien-style elf who has good reason not to trust humans. Erin accidentally saves Galan from death, and the two are bound to each other in a mysterious way. Can they defeat the dark elf Fellseth, who wants to finish Galan off and turn Erin into a mindless slave? Probably they can, but you’ll have to read the book to know for sure.

What inspired the story?

Orlando Bloom as Legolas. That hair. Those ears.

How would you classify or describe, Bound to Love Her?

I call it an urban-fantasy, romantic-suspense comedy. It’s really all those things, and in about equal parts.

Can you share with us your “Call” story?

I don’t have a good call story, so I’m going to make one up. You heard it here first.

I am at a large and noisy Halloween party, wearing pointy latex ears and a glittery green leotard and tutu, when my cell phone rings. I hand my gin fizz to Angel Joe and answer it.

“Esri, you got a two-book contract on the elf book!”

“What?! I can’t hear you!”

“Your elves! They sold!”

“I know I am, but what are you?” I hang up, laughing hysterically.

“Who was that?” my husband asks, giving me back my drink.

“I don’t know. Some weirdo.”

When we get home, there’s a big box of money on the doorstep.

Who has inspired you as a writer?

Ann Patchett, David Sedaris, Laurie King (her Mary Russell series), Terry Pratchett, Nicholas Christopher, Dave Barry, and all my writer friends in the Wet Noodle Posse, who taught me that not giving up is the only sure way to get published. Also, every romance writer that ever made me feel the longing and magic of new love while telling a ripping good yarn.

What would you like to tell aspiring writers?

I’m going to assume we’re talking about commercial-fiction writers. If we’re talking literature, I usually just say, “Go to a fancy school and drink a lot.” But for populist writers like myself, I have come up with a helpful formula which I didn’t follow at all.

Write first drafts until you develop your voice and find the genre you like most. Then write two books in it. Polish them in such a way that they aren’t completely out of line with current trends. Now present yourself to agents. Don’t give up. When you sell, you’ll have two books that just need some editing, you can get them on the shelves close together (which builds readership), and you can spend some time promoting instead of scrambling to write more.

What do you like to read?

Biographies and history, romance (especially historicals), books about/by illusionists (Ricky Jay!), books on stuff (like buildings or tea), humorous essays by folks like Sedaris and Bill Bryson, occasional lit titles that people recommend, kid’s books, mysteries, and The New Yorker magazine.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Curious, confident, and communicative. (Today’s adjectives are brought to you by the letter ‘C.’)

What is next for you?

I’m finishing the second book in the Elves Among Us Universe. Bound to Want Him will be released in May 2009 and has a lot of the same characters. I also have the first book in a mystery series that I need to polish and send to my agent. If enough people read me and my career doesn’t disappear with a tiny “gloop” sound, I’d like to have two series going at once.

Is there anything you’d like to ask readers?

How do you feel about bare-torsoed guys on book covers?

Thank you, Esri, for that fun interview!

You can learn more about Esri by visiting her website:  http://elvesamongus.com

Now onto the contest…

Esri donated two copies of Bound to Love Her to two lucky winners!

This giveaway is going to require a little work.

I am going to ask some trivia questions…all answers can be found on Esri’s website: http://elvesamongus.com and they are pretty simple so don’t worry.

I will post two questions today and two more tomorrow and for every correct answer, you will get an entry into the giveaway…so if you answer all four correctly, that’s four entries!
You can send the responses in separate e-mails or answer all 4 in one e-mail.
DO NOT POST THE ANSWERS HERE, PLEASE!

If you have any questions, please ask!

Here we go…

Taking Risks

Saturday, May 17, 2008

So this post is all about taking risks.  Are you a risk taker?  Or do you prefer to play safe?

I have never really considered myself much of a risk taker.  I tend to play it safe and go for the sure thing.

However, I got to thinking…maybe I am a risk taker.  I mean, don’t I take risks every time I pick up a new book to read?  Who knows what I will get as I open the pages and try something new?  Will I like it?  Will I find a new author to read?  Or will it be horrible?  Sometimes the risk pays off and I find a new fave author or a keeper to add to my collection and sometimes it doesn’t, but at least I took a chance, right?

I know, I know, it’s not exactly on par with bungee jumping or sky diving, but hey, I am taking baby steps. :)

Well, I was until last week when I took a big risk.  It may not be that big to many of you, but to me it was HUGE.  After some encouragement from a friend I entered a writing contest on another blog.  Keep in mind that I am a READER, not a writer, so this was a big deal for me.  I had never written anything like this before or entered writing contests or even let that many people read something I tried to write (well, other than my rambling blog posts).

But after much hesitation and a kick in the pants from a friend, I sat down and typed up a little 400 word scene based on the writing prompt, which was basically a girl telling a guy what she wants.  And after I did some editing (I seem to be wordy…I know, I sense your shock…hehe), I took a chance and entered.

Imagine my surprise when I learned that I am one of three finalists!  Me, the non-writer, non-risk-taker!  I couldn’t believe it!  And considering the great entries, this was an even bigger thrill and surprise!

You know, I am kind of proud of myself for taking the risk and entering and I like my entry (although I keep seeing things I’d do better, but I have been told that is normal for writers…hehe…I just called myself a writer…yeah, right).  Like any big risk, it was scary and nerve-wracking and it still is since people are reading and voting on the entries, but I dove in head first (okay, maybe I tip-toed into the shallow end…or rather I got pushed).  But regardless of the results at least I can say I tried and took a chance, right?  And isn’t that the point of taking a risk…taking a chance?

I do have to say that I have a greater appreciation for authors who put themselves out there with their work every day.  *claps hands in applause*  I don’t know how you do it with every book and story you write…this was just a little bitty scene.

Anyway, who knows where this latest risk will lead me?  But it has taught me a bit about myself and so far has been worth it…hmm…maybe I have a bit of a writer in me after all…

You can check out the contest and finalists here.  There are some great entries!

So, are you a risk taker?  What kind of risks have you taken?  Or do you prefer to play it safe?
