Interview with Kathy Love!

This time Kathy was gracious enough to answer a few questions…

 

So, what have you been up to since you were last here?

Erin and I have attended some wonderful conferences.  A great conference in Houma, LA, and Romantic Times, which was a lot of work because The Impalers appeared live–or undead, if you will.  And let me tell you, working with musicians is exhausting.  It’s like keeping five 3 year olds on task.  One is always wandering away.  Or overtired.  Or hungry.  But they did a great job and were a big hit, so it was worth the hard work. 

 

(Side note:  For those new to The Impalers, they are a fictional band created by Kathy and Erin, but are also portrayed in person by real life musicians)

 

I also sold three more books to Kensington Brava as well as a very odd and fun book that I wrote with my dear friend, Julie Cohen.  We sold it to Samhain Publishing, and we are using the pseudonym, B.H. Dark.  It’s a comedic alien romance about aliens trying to build an intergalactic porn empire. Very crazy and fun.

 

Tell us about your latest release.

My newest new release will be I Want You To Want Me in September.  It’s the story of Vittorio Ridgewood, the younger half-brother of Ren, who I introduced in Any Way You Want It, Vittorio suspects that someone is killing women that he’s been involved with.  Which makes falling in love with his downstairs mortal neighbor a dicey proposition.

Although I think Erika, the downstairs neighbor, is willing to take the risk.  This book includes demons, lampirs, vampires, musicians (supernatural entities unto themselves) and one very crazy and very creepy mother.

 

Sounds great! What inspired the story?

Well, not my own mom.   She’s a wonderful, completely non-creepy woman.  I actually plotted a lot of this book with Erin.  As you can see, Erin and I talk a lot.  :)  The idea also stemmed out of our work with the band guys in The Impalers.

 

Since the creation of The Impalers, what has been your favorite moment?

Really, pulling off any event we’ve done with them.  Musicians are a different breed altogether, and there’s a lot in in the care and feeding of them.  The idea is going well, but it is work.  Still it’s very cool to have our very own rock band.  And readers seem to like the concept.

 

Has the response to the vampire band been what you expected?

It’s been great.  They were so well-received at RT.  People danced and interacted with them.  It was fantastic.

 

What’s next for you?

Since I did sell three more books, I will be working on them.  They will continue the series started with Any Way You Want It and I Want You To Want Me.  Except I’ll be doing more with demons.  There are a lot of unhappy demons right now in my fictional world.  Mainly because someone has written a book about how to conjure them, and they want this book gone. 

 

What’s next for The Impalers?

Well, clearly Erin’s up for a little bloodletting.  But The Impalers will be appearing again at Heather Graham’s Writers for New Orleans conference this Labor Day weekend.  At the Monteleone right in the French Quarter.  And yes, one (maybe even two) of them are going to get the stake.

Interview with Erin McCarthy!

I asked Erin a few questions and here are her responses…

 

So, what have you been up to since you were last here? 

Probably trouble. ;-)  No, seriously, Kathy and I have been writing and going to conferences and hanging out together.  I have seven new releases out in 2008, and two reissues, so it’s been a busy year for me.

Here’s my release schedule for the rest of 2008:

May- Fallen

June- Bit The Jackpot (mass market reissue)

June- The Power of Love (anthology with Lori Foster and others, where author and agent profits go to the Battered Women’s Shelter)

August- First Blood (this is loosely connected to the Vegas Vamps)

August- You Don’t Know Jack (mass market reissue)

October- The Magical Christmas Cat (the second Cuttersville witches’ story)

November- Speed Demon (a Young Adult novel written as Erin Lynn)

November- Flat Out Sexy (my return to sexy contemporaries!)

 

Wow, that’s a lot of books. *makes notes*

 

Tell us about your latest release, Fallen.

The second in my Seven Deadly Sins series, FALLEN features the sin of gluttony, or addiction, which I see as the ultimate over consumption.  Fallen angel Gabriel St. John loses himself in the throes of absinthe and opium in the nineteenth century and wakes to find his mistress murdered.  Unsure if he is responsible for the heinous crime or not, he spends one hundred and fifty years trying to reconcile his morality with his sins.  When a similar murder occurs in contemporary times, Gabriel contacts the victim’s daughter to see if modern forensics can solve both crimes, and ultimately exonerate him.

 

Sara Michaels is struggling to accept her mother’s death and to live with her own fears that somehow she too will become a murder victim.  Traveling to New Orleans to work with Gabriel St. John is supposed to be a sabbatical, a way to achieve a sense of closure, but the instant chemistry between her and Gabriel is anything but peaceful.  A recovering addict herself, she knows that their passion might lead them to the ultimate destruction.

 

Once you have surrendered to the obsessions that have stained your soul, how can you ever trust your heart to recognize love… once you have fallen?

 

What inspired the story?

Not every book that I write pops into my head so cohesively as FALLEN, did.  It was September of 2006 and I was in New Orleans, when Kathy and I walked into a bar on Bourbon Street and saw a man playing the keyboard.  He had long, elegant fingers, and his eyes were closed, like he appreciated the music he was creating, and I instantly knew there was a story there.  (Okay, to be honest, that was after I confirmed with Kathy that he was a guy, because for a second, from behind, I thought he was a woman. LOL)   Over the next day, Kathy and I wandered around the French Quarter and came up with the basic outline for what would become FALLEN.  Kathy named the hero Gabriel, for which I owe her thanks.

 

As an aside, the keyboard player on Bourbon Street has become a friend of mine, and is responsible for choosing the piano piece Gabriel plays for Sara in FALLEN.  It plays in the background of the book trailer for FALLEN on my website, www.erinmccarthy.net, if you’re interested in hearing it.

 

Since the creation of The Impalers, what has been your favorite moment?

I think for me, standing there watching them play at Heather Graham’s conference in New Orleans and thinking, “We did this.  We created this band.”  It was a very cool moment.  Sort of like throwing our own prom. LOL.

 

What’s next for The Impalers?

Someone is going to die.  We just haven’t decided who yet, but we definitely plan to kill off a member on the website.  Oh, the power… LOL.
